MUZIEK
Zoekend naar blauw vond ik de melodie
“Het blauw van de oogen is gevaarlijk”.
Maar deze had ik al gebruikt in BvV #3.34,
daar staat ook de basis-informatie.
Deze keer de oorspronkelijk Engelse versie met de titel:
“Drub The Rogues” [= Ransel de Schurken].
De gebruikte versie komt uit: AIRD, vol. II (1785) en is
digitaal te vinden op Traditional Tune Archive
(https://tunearch.org/wiki/TTA).
Opmerkelijke verschillen zijn de toonsoort en structuur.
De Nederlandse versie is in F, een voor zang gemakkelijke toonsoort.
De Engelse instrumentale versie in toonsoort G,
die heel geschikt is voor viool.
De Nederlandse liedversie bestaat uit één deel,
terwijl de Engelse versie uit drie delen bestaat.
De toegevoegde accoorden zijn van mijn hand.

MUSIC
Searching for “blue,” I found the melody
“The blue of the eyes is dangerous.”
However, I had already used it in BvV #3.34,
where the basic information is also provided. This time,
I present the original English version titled “Drub The Rogues.”
The version used comes from: AIRD, vol. II (1785) and
can be found digitally on the Traditional Tune Archive
(https://tunearch.org/wiki/TTA).
Notable differences include the key and structure.
The Dutch version is in F, a key that is easy for singing.
The English instrumental version is in the key of G,
which is very suitable for the violin.
The Dutch song version consists of one part,
while the English version consists of three parts.
The added chords are my own.

Een trappenroute voor rolstoelen, dat kan niet kloppen.
In werkelijkheid verwijst dit bordje, bij deze hindernisbaan,
naar een toegang voor rolstoelen, maar ver uit het zicht.

MUZIEK
De enige melodie met een trap-titel die ik kon vinden was
“De Wenteltrap”. Ik heb de versie uit ca. 1770 al gebruikt
in BvV #2.42 (zie archief).
Dus nu een variant met de alternatieve titel
“Nu onlangs geleden” uit het Handschrift Volksmelodieën.
In de uitgave De Nieuwe Hollandsche Schouwburg (1751) staat
de melodie onder de titel “Nu onlangs geleden kwam ik onverwagt”.
Een tweede stem en een slotfrase heb ik toegevoegd.

In reality, this sign, at this obstacle course,
refers to a wheelchair access point,
but it is far out of sight.

MUSIC
The only melody with a stair-related title I could find was
“The Spiral Staircase.” I had already used the version
from around 1770 in BvV #2.42 (see archive).
So now, here’s a variant with the alternative title
“Just Recently” from the Manuscript of Folk Melodies.
In the publication “De Nieuwe Hollandsche Schouwburg” (1751),
the melody is listed under the title
“Just Recently, I Came Unexpectedly.”
I have added a second voice and a concluding phrase.

Bomen met strepen.
In het bos van het voormalige huis Starkenborgh,
ook Huis te Wehe, Borgweer of Nijenklooster genoemd,
was een borg gelegen ten noordwesten van Wehe-den Hoorn en
ten zuiden van de Hoornse Vaart in de provincie Groningen.

MUZIEK
In het Archief van de stad Groningen ligt het muziekhandschrift
van Edzert Jacob Tjaerda van Starkenborgh.
Het handschrift bestaat uit twee delen.
Het totaal bestaat uit 90 melodieën, waarvan het eerste deel
grotendeels kopieën zijn van bekende populaire instrumentale
dansmelodieën, met uitzondering van 17 titelloze nummers.
Er zijn 19 melodieën die niet ergens anders voorkomen,
waaronder een aantal slordig genoteerde, maatloze melodieën.
Negen melodieën vond ik de moeite waard
om te voorzien van akkoorden. Het tweede deel bestaat uit
10 religieuze liedmelodieën inclusief tekst.
Nummer 40 is getiteld Contradans,
deze heb ik voorzien van accoorden en een tweede stem.

there was a country house located northwest of
Wehe-den Hoorn and south of the Hoornse Vaart
in the province of Groningen

MUSIC
In the Archive of the city of Groningen lies the music
manuscript of Edzert Jacob Tjaerda van Starkenborgh.
The manuscript consists of two parts.
The total comprises 90 melodies, of which the first part
largely consists of copies of well-known popular
instrumental dance melodies,
with the exception of 17 untitled pieces.
There are 19 melodies that do not appear elsewhere,
including a number of carelessly notated,
melodies without bar-lines.
I found nine melodies worth adding chords to.
The second part consists of 10 religious song melodies,
including lyrics. Number 40 is titled Contradans,
which I have provided with chords and a second voice.

“Binnen mijn sloot” vond ik wel een passende titel.
Een fraaie melodie uit “Boerenliedjes” nr. 788 (1713).
Wellicht een sarabande.

For me, the shape-colour combination was a surprise.

MUSICI found “Binnen mijn sloot” [In My Ditch] to be a fitting title.

Lopend door een klein straatje kreeg ik direct medelijden
en bewondering voor de kracht van deze Maranta,
ook wel bekend als de Tiengebodenplant of Prayerplant.
Wat een levenskracht om je zo door het lamellengordijn te worstelen.

MUZIEK
Tien Geboden. Deze melodie komt voor het eerst voor in 1557 en
blijft populair tot 1957 voor verschillende liedteksten.
Een van de bekendste liedteksten is Psalm 140 [CXL]
van berijmer P. Datheen met de beginregel:
“O mijn God wil mij nu bevrijden, Voor de mensen zeer boos en kwaad.”
De melodie komt o.a. voor in Der Fluyten Lust-Hof van Jacob van Eyck
(met 3 instrumentale variaties), bij Marnix van St. Aldegonde,
in het handschrift / luitboek Thysius en Hieronymus van Alphen.
In de Engelse verzameling van Fitzwilliam (1609) staat
een versie van J.P. Sweelinck.
Het merendeel van de liedteksten zijn religieus van aard.
Mijn bewerking is op basis van de notatie in UYT-SPANNINGEN
van J. van Lodenstein (1676) met de liedtitel:
Het jonge en onbecommert leven.

Whilst strolling through a small street, I immediately felt pity
and admiration for the strength of this Maranta plant,
also known as the Ten Commandments plant or Prayer plant.
What vitality it had to have struggled through the louvered curtain like that.

MUSIC Ten Commandments. This melody first appeared in 1557
and remained popular until 1957 for various song lyrics.
One of the most well-known ones is Psalm 140 [CXL]
by paraphraser P. Datheen, the opening line of which is:
“O my Lord, now liberate me, For mankind very angry and evil.”
The melody appears in Der Fluyten Lust-Hof by Jacob van Eyck
(with 3 instrumental variations), with Marnix van St. Aldegonde,
in the manuscript/lute book Thysius and Hieronymus van Alphen.In the English collection by Fitzwilliam (1609)
there is a version by J.P. Sweelinck.
The majority of the song lyrics are of a religious nature.My adaptation is based on the notation in UYT-SPANNINGEN

naar links moet gaan, wordt je het bos ingestuurd.
In principe staan de borden keurig, maar het ingenomen standpunt
is diagonaals op de rijrichtingen.

MUZIEK
“Nu wil ick reisen gaan” is de Nederlandse titel
voor de Franse melodie “Je ne puis eviter”.
Het is een sarabande die in de Nederlanden populair is
van 1737 tot 1767. De oudste versie is de Franse air de cour
‘En vain je veux celer” van Chancy (1635). Onder de titel
“Nu wil ick reisen gaan” staat ze in het handschrift Enkhuizen
dat Cor van Sliedregt ontdekte in het Westfries Archief.
Frits Reynaert, de stadsbeiaardier van Enkhuizen,
speelt de melodie met variaties op het carillon van
de Drommedaris, een stadspoort en verdedigingstoren uit 1540.

In principle, the signs are neat, but the taken position
is diagonal to the directions of the traffic.

MUSIC
“Nu wil ick reisen gaan” [Now I want to start traveling]
is the Dutch title for the French melody “Je ne puis eviter”.
It is a Sarabande that was popular in the Netherlands
from 1737 to 1767. The oldest version is the French air de cour
‘En vain je veux celer” by Chancy (1635). Under the title
“Nu wil ick reisen gaan” it is found in the Enkhuizen manuscript
that Cor van Sliedregt discovered in the Westfries Archives.
Frits Reynaert, the city carillonneur of Enkhuizen,
plays the melody with variations on the carillon of
the Drommedaris, a city gate and defense tower from 1540.

Een groene plek voor groene auto’s. Een nieuw verschijnsel.
Voorlopig blijft deze plek leeg. De meningen zijn verdeeld
over de groene kwaliteiten van electrische auto’s.
De tijd zal het leren.

MUZIEK
Er zijn vele moderne liedjes over auto’s. In de 17e en 18e eeuw
was de koets het luxe, min of meer gezins vervoersmiddel.
De trekschuit was het algemene vervoersmiddel vergelijkbaar met
de hedendaagse autobus of trein is.
Ik koos voor de melodie met de titel “Buiten in het groen”
uit de bundels van Estienne Rogier en Pieter Mortier,
Amsterdamse drukkers/uitgevers in het begin van de 18e eeuw.

For now, this spot remains empty.
Opinions are divided on the green qualities of electric cars.
Time will tell.

MUSIC There are many modern songs about cars.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the carriage was the luxury,
more or less family means of transport.
The canal boat was the common means of transportation
comparable to today’s bus or train.
I chose the melody titled “Buiten in het groen”
[Outside in the green] from the collections of
Estienne Rogier and Pieter Mortier,
Amsterdam printers/publishers in the early 18th century.

Als je minigolf wilt spelen in een Frans oerwoud,
dan begrijp ik de waarschuwing.

MUZIEK
“Boureé opt spel” komt uit een Vlaams handschrift:
Het Haegelant van ca. 1753.
Bij de toevoeging “opt spel” in de titel komt de vraag op:
Waar gaat het over ?
Ik vermoed dat het op het klokkespel of beiaard gespeeld werd.
Ellen van de Grijn-Santen van het Meertens Instituut denkt aan
een rederijkers-spel of een komisch toneelstuk,
waarin vaak een dansje ten tonele kwam.

If you want to play mini-golf in a French jungle,
then I understand the warning.

MUSIC
“The Boureé opt spel” comes from a Flemish manuscript:
Het Haegelant from around 1753. With the addition “opt spel”
in the title, the question arises: What is it about?
I suspect it was played on the carillon or the beiaard.
Ellen van de Grijn-Santen from the Meertens Institute believes
it could be a rhetorician (rederijkers) play or a comic play,
in which a dance often took place.

Explanation: Rhetoricians, “rederijkers” were members
of literary societies in the Low Countries
(modern-day Netherlands and Belgium)
during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance (1450 – 1650).
These societies were called “rederijkkamers” (chambers of rhetoric),
and their members practiced and promoted the art of
rhetoric, poetry, and drama.

Dit bord staat op de boulevard van Oostende, België.
Als fietser raak je hier in een perpetuum mobile.
Het fietsbord heeft twee pijlen: ten hemel of ter aarde.
De fiets zelf gaat naar links, terwijl het grote bord erboven
dwingend naar rechts wijst.
Met andere woorden je kan overal naar toe.
Maar het bord is gefotografeerd vanaf het strand,
met de zee achter je rug.
De aanwijzingen zijn naar boven en naar beneden,
naar links en naar rechts, maar vooruit …?

MUZIEK
In het liedarchief zijn wijsaanduidingen te vinden
met de titels: “Verdwaelt zynze van de reden”;
“Hier kom ik dwalen” en “Dwaelen my de sinnen”.
Allen helaas zonder muzieknotatie.
Gelukkig bestaat er wel een muzieknotatie van
“Nu wil ik gaan dwalen” (ca. 1730).

As a cyclist, you enter a perpetual motion machine here.
The bike sign has two arrows: to heaven or to earth.
The bike itself goes to the left, while the large sign above it
insistently points to the right.
In other words, you can go anywhere.
But the sign is photographed from the beach,
with the sea behind you.
The directions are up and down, left and right, but forward…?

MUSIC
In the song archive, there are tune indications with the titles:
“They are lost from reason”; “Here I come to wander” and
“My senses are wandering”.
Unfortunately, they are all without music notation.
Luckily, there is a music notation of “Now I want to go wandering” (ca. 1730).

Klimop veroverde dit huis als ‘groentje’, maar lijkt nu te blozen.
Het aantal schoorstenen vertelt iets over de ouderdom van dit huis.

MUZIEK
“Ginds is mijn moeders woning” is een lied dat ook bekend is onder
de titel “De Harpspeelster”. Een korte melodie voor een sentimenteel,
romantisch lied, eind 19e eeuw. De samenvatting van de tekst is:

Ver weg is mijn moeders woning, haar graf is dichtbij.
Mijn vader is in de strijd gesneuveld.
Andere mensen wonen nu in die woning.
Mijn moeder zei: Wees stil, bescheiden en geduldig.
Tot troost speel ik de harp, die blijft bij mij.

Er zijn vier bronnen met deze melodie, die grotendeels gelijk zijn. In de mp3 is de basis en een variant te horen met daarna twee variaties van mij.

Ivy conquered this house as a ‘beginner’,
but now it seems to be blushing.
The number of chimneys says something about the age of this house.

MUSIC
“Over there is my mother’s home” is a song also known as
“The Harp Player”. A short melody for a sentimental,
romantic song, late 19th century.

The summary of the lyrics is:
Far away is my mother’s home, her grave is nearby.
My father fell in battle.
Other people now live in that home.
My mother said: Be quiet, humble, and patient.
For solace, I play the harp, which remains with me.

There are four sources with this melody, which are largely the same.
In the mp3, the base and one variation can be heard,
followed by two variations by me.
